To detect inter turn short in stator coil, slip ring wound rotor and DC Armature. Keep an iron feeler on the slot and place the growler on the other side of the coil or on the same slot if space permits.

If there is an inter turn short in the coil, the iron feeler will be pulled down to the slot and will stick and vibrate. 

To detect broken / cracked bar in the squirrel cage rotor Keep iron feeler or hacksaw blade on the slot and place the growler on the same slot.

If there is a broken /cracked bar, the hacksaw blade will not vibrate or stick to the slot. 

A built-in pick-up coil with growler along with an external milli ammeter. Place the growler on the slot and the output lead to the milli ammeter.

If there is a short turn in the slot, the meter will indicate. The meter will show ‘O’ reading when there is no short. Meter reading can be adjusted with the pot.
